Amman Design Week 2019: Possibilities

Amman Design Week 2019: Possibilities

Design is often cited as a discipline that has the potential to solve many of the world’s problems, with designers assigned the vast responsibility of refining and improving every aspect of our daily lives. With a future that is unpredictable and unclear, the question often becomes ‘what can design do for —-(refugees, the environment, water, food)—?’.

In the world of design, new ideas are germinating, and the understanding and expectations of design are being redefined and reassessed.

In 2019, we are looking at design as a catalyst for dreaming; the act of imagining what can be different from the way it is today, and moving towards it. We are shifting the conversation from the reactive act of problem-solving to the bridging of dreams and reality.

We invite designers to engage with us in a process of re-imagination, both of who we are, but also of what we can do, and the future we can deliver through design. We hope to collectively embark on a journey of discovery – to leave behind what is, and imagine what could be.

“Possibilities” is a celebration of the fictional, incomplete, and unsolved. It invites the creation of scenarios and storytelling, narrations by the makers through the act of making. In the spirit of speculative design, it is more about asking questions than finding the answers.

We are not in search of one all-inclusive utopia, but a celebration of the plurality of all that is possible; the many utopias that can be created by the mind that uses design as a tool for reinterpreting possible pasts, redesigning possible presents, and reimagining possible futures.

The future is makeable, so what are the possibilities?

MMAG Foundation: When the Rifle’s Soul is Poetry

Session One
Reading Group: When the Rifle’s Soul is Poetry

“Your name, my love, was more beautiful in the warden’s mouth
Your face, my love, was more beautiful in the executioner’s hand
Your voice, my love, was more beautiful while wet with love’s flames
You were more beautiful, my love; more beautiful”
– Mu’in Bseiso

In contrast to dominant literary styles, the Palestinian poet Mu’in Bseiso was keen to give the character of the Fedayee and the freedom fighter a social dimension—a character he was familiar with due to his own political history. He was hence able to write his autobiography Descent into the water: Palestinian notes from Arab exile (1980) to embody the outsets of the Palestinian revolutionary process after 1948

Taking the works of Mu’in — also known as the Poet of the Palestinian Revolution, When the Rifle’s Soul is Poetry is a reading session in Palestinian literature to examine the development of the freedom fighter’s character, through readings of his poetry, drama, and prose

Who is the freedom fighter? What’s their identity, and what are their beliefs? Did their goals differ? Have they traded faith for expediency? Was their revolution suppressed, or were they stripped of their ambition to simply become an icon?

In these sessions, we will focus on how this character was portrayed, from the Nakba of 1948, the Naksa of 1967 and the departure from Lebanon in 1982. We will examine what impact Palestinian art and literature have had — in its documentation of events related to Palestinian people and their political history — on forming a collective imagination of the Fedayee

The reading group will be facilitated by the researcher Omar Bseiso on Monday, July 22, and Monday, July 29 at the MMAG Foundation

The sessions are free and open to all, and will be conducted in Arabic

Nabad Art Gallery: Displaced by Dina Haddadin

DISPLACED

“In a city that is exposed to a continuum of development and re-development, the subject of displacement renders its spaces its margins  and its people, in constant flux under an imposed system of order, of regularity, of certainty and of uniformity, where intangible boundaries and margins are also in constant mutation and formation.
The stone quarries in this body of work are a metaphor for the concept of displacement. The system that is imposed; the grid that is a symbol of modernity dressed onto the mountain, cutting it into fragments like Lego pieces, systematically ordered, and patiently waiting in line for their assembly.
This is what we are left with, then, a negative space that by itself is a geometric ensemble of grids, layers and fragments. A symbol of a fabricated reality that artificially structures and holds its own determination and potentiality. A symbol of the alien inserted into the familiar landscape—flattened, geometricized, ordered, anti-natural, anti-mimetic, anti-real.” Dina Haddadin
